CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — At the Bilandic Building downtown, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Rochford was sworn in after what she acknowledged was a tough and uncomfortable campaign.
"But the wonderful bright spot of the campaign trail was being offered the opportunity to talk to Illinois residents across the state," Rochford said.
Rochford said she did enjoy the opportunity to talk with citizens and hopes to continue to do so while on the bench.
With last week's swearing-in of Justice Joy Cunningham, and the later swearing-in of Mary Kay O'Brien on Monday, Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis said there will be five women on the state's high court, three of whom are African American.
Theis noted that trust in public institutions, including the court system, was at a low point, but she urged people to look at the Illinois Supreme Court and who's on it.
"Today, look at us," Theis said. "Look at who your court is. The people of the state of Illinois can see with their own eyes that we reflect all the people of this state. As always, we will continue with our commitment to work every day to earn the people's trust."
