CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A South Side Chicago food business incubator has taken a big step forward with the blessing of the City Council’s Zoning Committee.
The Zoning Committee has approved changes needed to clear the way for “Soul City Kitchens” to take over a century-old building that was once a Streets and Sanitation Department facility.
Lennox Jackson, the CEO of the developer Urban Equities, said it would be a hub for new food businesses to develop and use.
"What we're looking forward to doing is removing barriers and creating opportunities for those folks who are in the food space mainly chefs, caterers, ghost kitchen operators, food truck operators."
He said food truck operators—for example—could prepare their products in one of the estimated 12 kitchens on site. Jackson says he hopes the four and a half million-dollar project will be up and running by 2024.
This is one of the Administration’s Invest South/West initiatives. 3rd Ward Alderwoman Pat Dowell supports the project. The Zoning Committee has given it’s approval. Now it’s up to the Full City Council.
