City encourages child COVID shots on Vaccination Awareness Day

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- In the City of Chicago, Friday is Vaccination Awareness Day, and there’s a big effort to try to get children vaccinated against COVID-19.

There are no classes Friday for Chicago Public Schools students. The city and district officials hope parents take advantage of the day to get their children vaccinated, especially 5- to 11-year olds, who are now eligible for COVID shots.

Vaccinations are being given at eight CPS schools, plus at various city health clinics and select pharmacies. Online registration is requested.

Below are some options specific to Friday, Nov. 12:

• CDPH Uptown Immunization Clinic (845 W Wilson Ave., 2nd level): 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Register online
• CDPH Greater Lawn Immunization Clinic (4150 W 55th St): 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Register online
• Family Vaccine Clinic, Arturo Velasquez Institute: 9 a.m. to noon, Register online or by phone at 773-254-1400
• Little Black Pearl Pop-Up: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Register online or walk-ins welcome at 1060 E. 47th Street
• CPS, Chicago Vocational Career Academy: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Register online
• CPS, Clark High School: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Register online
• CPS, Richards High School: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Register online

As an incentive, $100 gift cards will be given to families getting 5- to 11-year olds vaccinated at Chicago Department of Public Health clinics or vaccination events.

Additionally, city workers are being given two hours off work with pay to get themselves and their families vaccinated.

For those still looking to get vaccinated, CDPH will host family vaccination clinics at City Colleges of Chicago. These events will offer pediatric COVID-19 Pfizer vaccines, as well as Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines and booster doses to all Chicagoans. Patients must be 18 or older to receive a J&J vaccine. All clinics will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is required and open now at www.chi.gov/YouthVax.
