CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The City of Chicago has crews busy filling potholes in the relatively mild weather, and its encouraging people to report potholes on their streets.

A crew was filling potholes at 81st and Marshfield on Thursday. It is one of about two dozen working throughout the city.

CDOT is targeting approximately 150 miles of streets and alleys to be resurfaced in 2024. This includes a nearly two-mile stretch of South Ashland Avenue in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood where Thursday’s pothole patching took place.

“Quickly repairing our streets and responding to pothole complaints are the type of neighborhood services that make a big difference in quality of life for residents," said 17th ward Alderman David Moore.

Acting commissioner for the Chicago Department of Transportation Tom Carney said the department has filled more than 143,0000 potholes so far this year and they’re not as bad as they’ve been in some seasons.

"We haven't seen as many of the freeze thaw cycles, so when you don't have that, that certainly helps," he explained.

"We haven't had as much snow. When the snow and the water gets into the pavement, that's where we really see the potholes. Also, if you get a series of those snow events, our crews can't get out and work."

Potholes can be reported by calling 311.
