CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Christkindlmarket shoppers in the Loop experienced a bona fide Chicago rally Saturday afternoon as a coalition of unions and community organizations shouted, through megaphones, their demands of candidates for the upcoming 2023 local elections.

“Jingle bells, abolish jails,” chanted Miracle Boyd, of Good Kids Mad City, as she led dozens of people in a march around the market and adapted classic holiday carols to include lyrics reflecting their ongoing fight for social justice.

A spokesperson for Grassroots Collective, Nathan Ryan, said the march also featured members from the Chicago Coalition of the Homeless, SEIU Health Care, South Siders Together Organizing for Power, West Side Rising, and others.

The unions and organizations represented residents from every side of the city. They’re now looking ahead to creating the People’s Unity Platform, with which they'll work to boost candidates who meet the coalition's six demands.

They will be looking to elect candidates focused on health and public safety, housing, education, workers’ rights, violence prevention, and the environment.
