CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability this evening will vote on three finalists to forward to Mayor Brandon Johnson for police superintendent.

There were more than fifty applicants. The commission has the list whittled down to six. Three names will be forwarded to the mayor. He has the option of rejecting each and sending the commission back to start over. That’s considered unlikely.

The mayor has 30 days to make a decision that’s considered one of the most important that he’ll make.

Five of the six semifinalists are insiders. Some observers see that as inside politics in the selection process. Chicago does have that reputation.

The job pays $260,000 a year, and the challenges are many.
