(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s Better Business Bureau is alerting people to scams in which fraudsters ask for donations they say will go toward Hurricane Ida relief.
To avoid potential getting taken, CEO Steve Bernas advises people donate to well-known groups or organizations that have been vetted (go to the BBB’s give.org for tips).
“It is wonderful the public wants to help Louisiana and Mississippi residents who are facing food shortages, heat and humidity, power outages, and lack of water, but be very careful which organizations you choose to support,” Bernas said in a news release.
“Scammers create fake donation websites to take advantage of the situation,” he added. “You might even get a phone call from a con artist soliciting money.”
