(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Cook County has outlined the latest phase of its transportation development plans and the Southland will see a considerable amount of activity.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said the Invest In Cook initiative is in its sixth year now.

“In the program’s six years, we’ve awarded $48.7 (million), that’s almost $50 million in grants, in a total of 205 awards across the county. These efforts represent our commitment to invest in projects that are critical to improving  our communities,” Preckwinkle said.

The latest round includes two transit projects, 16 for pedestrians, 11 for bicycles, one freight project and 13 roads. Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson looks forward to a new Roosevelt Road Streetscape.

“Implementing our three-phase Roosevelt (Road) Streetscape Improvement Project in Broadview will help ensure the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists alike who are traveling through our community,” Thompson said.

County Commissioner Brandon Johnson said improving transportation for vehicles and pedestrians is the key to economic development, especially in economically challenged areas,

“Creating opportunities for families to be able to move from one point of the district or county to another point, it’s a matter of justice and opportunity,” Johnson said.

The money budgeted for the project will total almost $9 million.
