CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio) – A federal appeals court has upheld the 10-year prison sentence of a suburban Chicago doctor convicted of health care fraud.
Mona Ghosh, 53, of Inverness, pleaded guilty to two fraud counts tied to her Hoffman Estates OB-GYN practice.
Federal prosecutors said Ghosh billed Medicaid and other insurers for medically unnecessary procedures and services between 2018 and 2022. Authorities said some procedures were performed without patients’ consent and could affect their ability to have children.
Ghosh was sentenced in June of 2025 and ordered to pay $1.5 million in restitution.
She argued on appeal that the sentence was unreasonable and that the trial judge placed too much emphasis on patient harm while not giving her enough credit for accepting responsibility.
The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected those arguments Friday, ruling that the judge was entitled to weigh the harm to patients more heavily than evidence presented in Ghosh’s favor.
