CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Public Schools officials say progress is being made in getting some of the dirtiest schools clean again following complaints that some schools in the city are filthy and are not being kept clean.

CPS CEO Pedro Martinez told the Chicago school board yesterday there’s going to be more deep cleaning at schools over the Thanksgiving break and that his staff will have more to report to the board at next month’s meeting.

"The biggest challenge that I still see is we have staff that are scheduled and then, at the last minute, somebody doesn’t show up," he said.

CPS is trying to address the shortage of custodial staff with holding job fairs this week and hiring outside vendors for emergency work.

"That has been our biggest problem and so that’s when we tightened up our communication loops very clearly so that there’s an escalation process and then we can deploy our mobile crew to be able to help those schools," Martinez said.

School board president Miguel del Valle said all schools have to be clean. He also said all it takes is one problem at one school to get attention and then people generalize that all schools are dirty.

"We don’t want problems at any schools. We want 100% satisfaction with our custodial services."
