Navy Pier’s Fourth of July fireworks Saturday night will be part of a full weekend of activities at one of Chicago's most popular tourist destinations.
At the pier on Saturday afternoon, the trending style was the matching T-shirt, as bachelorette parties, family reunions, other gatherings, and conventions called Navy Pier home for the warm summer day.
Amidst the live performances, souvenir shops, restaurants, bars, and great views of the lake and Chicago skyline, Ervin Harvel said it was the perfect time and place for his family’s 30th reunion.
“We came down for the eatery, the scenery, and to have some funnery (sic),” he said. He spoke for the 60 members of the Hunter family who traveled to Chicago for the holiday weekend. “Our ancestors started in Selma, Alabama.”
Others had a shorter journey to Saturday’s festivities. Tyler, who showed up with a group of friends from Uptown, said it was his first time at Navy Pier.
“It’s pretty electric,” Tyler said. “Got a little bit of everything, good drinks, people having a good time — it’s good.”
The Uptown resident said Navy Pier had everything on Saturday — well, almost.
“I would say if they had a Portillo’s in here, there’d be no other reason to go anywhere else,” he said.
Navy Pier’s Fourth of July fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m.
