(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Crystal Lake couple killed in the dust storm crashes on Interstate 55 last week will be laid to rest Thursday, after a visitation Wednesday evening.

Joe and Donna Bates met at work, at Bankers Life Casualty Insurance in Chicago.

Joe later rose to become vice president after serving as a marine in Vietnam and getting a degree in accounting from Indiana University. According to their obituary, Donna was a “queen of harmony,” a title she earned during one of many singing competitions.

She performed with various groups, including the Melo-Edge quartet — which sang on three international cruises, the Phil Donahue Show and a Toni Tennille special.

One of her choral group mates told the Northwest Herald they wore ribbons in her memory at a singing competition last weekend.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to the “Coronet Club” of Sweet Adelines International — a competition Donna was supposed to perform in last weekend — and the Gibson County Humane Society in Joe’s native Princeton, Ind.
