Damage assessments to be conducted following tornadoes, storms

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Now that daylight is here, cleanup and damage assessments will be able to be done in areas hit by tornadoes Tuesday night west of the city.

There were reported tornadoes that touched down in Kane, McHenry and DeKalb counties Monday evening. One house in the Burlington area was moved off its foundation by a couple of feet. There were also a few roofs blown off and a barn badly damaged. There are no reports of injuries right now.

The Darnell Family told CBS 2 a twister hit their property, but did not cause much damage.

"We'd seen the funnel straight ahead of us. Told the family, ‘hurry up, rush downstairs.’ It was two minutes..." Jimmy Darnell said.

"We just made it to the bottom of the stairs and that’s just when everything started hitting. Soon as we shut that door, the lights went out and things started hitting the house, shaking the house, and calm down and (we were) able to come up and see what damage we had," Darnell said.

A woman, who lives in Burlington, said her property was hit by a tornado, but she told CBS 2 her home was apparently not badly damaged.

"We don’t hear the sirens out this far, and if we do, the winds were so loud, but we seen it before we even heard it," she said.

Another woman reportedly had a screen door ripped out of her hand and blown away, as she was trying to shut it when a tornado hit.

There were also tornadoes reported in Maple Park, Kirkland, Sycamore, Hampshire, Malta, Paw Paw, and other towns.
