(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The end of Daylight Saving Time is Sunday, paving the way for pre-5 p.m. sunsets. But, did you know some of the surprising facts about the changing of the clocks?

First, it’s not “Daylight Savings Time,” it’s “Daylight Saving Time.” It’s grammatical. What you’re doing during this time is saving daylight.

The switch in time was not invented by Ben Franklin, by the way. It came from a suggestion in one of his satirical essays, writing about Parisians who should wake up earlier to save money on lamp oil.

Another misconception: the practice originated to benefit farmers. In fact, farmers didn’t like it at all. You see, dairy cows expect to be milked at the same time, regardless of what the clock says.

Lastly, it’s not a worldwide thing, not even a national thing. About 70 countries observe Daylight Saving Time, and Hawaii and Arizona are on permanent Standard Time.

The clocks will fall back one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday.
