CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — R. Kelly's federal trial in Chicago is set to start on Aug. 15, but attorneys for one of his co-defendants have called for an investigation into actions taken by the former lead prosecutor.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Angel Krull was once the lead prosecutor on the federal case against R. Kelly and his co-defendants, including Derrel McDavid.

In a federal court filing, McDavid’s attorneys said that on Aug. 1 the government provided them with copies of emails from April 2019 between Krull and former Chicago Sun Times journalist, Jim DeRogatis.

DeRogatis was a potential witness in the case and the author of a book about the R. Kelly scandal.

According to McDavid's attorneys, Krull created a gmail account under a fake name in order to secretly communicate with DeRogatis — using the alias "Demetrius Slovenski."

The attorneys also noted that the government was aware of the questionable communications for years and only disclosed them to the defense less than two weeks before the start of the trial.

Defense attorneys said the disclosure "creates, at the very least, the appearance of impropriety, which needs to be investigated."

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office said they will be filing a written response with the court by the end of the week.
