CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Doctors and other staffers will be rockin’ Friday outside Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, with a celebratory concert for their colleagues. It comes after a momentous year.

As Director of Critical Care at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital, Dr. Jeffrey Huml is part of a staff that rose to the challenge of coping with the coronavirus pandemic over the last year. And as a guitar-playing country music lover, he’s joining the doctor-led group called "Vital Signs" on Friday for two hours to say thank you to staff with an outdoor concert.

The hospital did a similar concert last May. Dr. Huml said they’ve learned a lot about COVID-19 since then, and this years gathering is more celebratory.

"I think in critical care in the intensive care unit, the way in which we saves lives is to anticipate what's going to happen," he said. "We've realized that there are few things that we can't do when we do them together, and we are very proud in the way that we've carried ourselves, the way we cared for these very difficult and challenging patients at a very challenging time; so this week is just to celebrate that good work," he said.

Dr. Huml said thanking the staff with music is a blast.

"Every country song tells a story and is very unique in a special way. And really it's all about hard work, it's about America, it's about family, it's about believing in each other and each one of those songs, that just says it all really," he said.

The medical personnel will be masked and socially distant, but there are expected to be lots of smiles under those masks.
