(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Every dog has its day, and that includes pups at Anderson Humane.

The South Elgin shelter rolled out its Doggie Day Out program earlier this month. It allows people to borrow an adoptable dog for a day of pup cups, snuggles and long walks.

“Whatever time they're out of the shelter, whatever extra love and attention these guys are getting, it is absolutely great for the dogs, good for people, it’s great all the way around,” said Dean Daubert, the chief operating officer at Anderson Humane.

Not only does the Doggie Day Out program cater to those who want some puppy playtime without the long-term commitment, it also gives the dogs a chance to break away from a sometimes stressful environment.

“It's loud, there's other dogs there in their kennel,” Daubert said. “They do get lots of walks throughout the day from our staff and our volunteers, but it's not the same as getting the long walk at the forest preserve or some playtime in the backyard.”

While out and about, each dog has the chance to find their forever home.

Attached to their leash is a QR code that can get scanned and take someone directly to the dog’s adoption page.

Daubert tells WBBM the fido field trips also help staff gain a better understanding of how the dogs interact when they're away from the shelter.

“Sometimes the only place we see these dogs is at the shelter and their behavior isn't the same here as it necessarily is in the home,” he said. “So, we're able to get some really good feedback and help them widen their adoption field.”

Those interested in volunteering for the Doggie Day Out program can fill out an application online at AHConnects.org/foster.
