Complaints are surging as scammers are impersonating the Cook County Sheriff and the Illinois State Police.
These imposters say there is an overdue fine, ticket or other problem, and sometimes they use actual names and titles of real law enforcement officers to trick people into providing personal and financial data, and making payments with money apps, gift cards and debit cards.
Here are some tips:
-Law enforcement agencies will not call and threaten you to pay fines or tickets, so just hang up.
-Never call numbers or click links in suspicious emails. Always verify numbers on official websites and call directly.
