(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — People can choose not to come — that’s the message the Downers Grove Public Library shared after receiving opposition to its planned drag bingo event for teens in October.

On Monday, Congressional candidate Keith Pekau and a conservative group with ties to his campaign denounced the event.

In its statement, the library said it planned the event in celebration of National Coming Out Day, which is Oct. 11. Drag queen Aurora Divine will call the numbers and perform the song “Firework” by Katy Perry.

In a Facebook post, Pekau called the event “inappropriate” and an “unacceptable use of taxpayer funds.”

The library said its goal is to provide a safe and accepting environment, and that diverse programs like drag queen bingo help celebrate people who are different.

Downers Grove Public Library said its event is open to teens in grades 7 – 12. The library added it’s up to parents to decide whether they feel the program is suitable for their teen.

Library officials said the program is currently full but added that a waitlist is open.
