(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The city is welcoming ice skaters back to Millennium Park Friday to kick off another year of skating and holiday fun.

Ann Hickey with the City of Chicago said the opening of The McCormick Tribune Ice Rink is just the beginning of the holiday activities in Chicago.

"We're right here in Millennium Park in the heart of downtown Chicago," she added.

"I feel that this really kicks off the season, with the tree lighting, then there's the Christkindlmarket, the Mag Mile lights festival, the wreathing of the lions, so many wonderful traditions here in Chicago."

Chelsea Ridley teaches ice skating at the rink. She said it's a must-do activity during the holidays in Chicago.

"I feel like it's awesome that you can do this activity with a family, and I feel family is really important during the holidays...this is a sport for all ages, for everybody."

The rink is open through March. Admission is free, but online tickets are required.
