
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A 24-year-old man faces several charges after, police said, he fled from officers in a stolen vehicle and then caused a serious crash on the South Side.
According to Chicago Police, the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. Friday, on Lithuanian Plaza Court, just west of 69th and Western.
An officer spotted a previously reported stolen Honda van that was driven by 24-year-old Jesus Ortiz, police said. The officers attempted to pull the van over, but Ortiz drove away. Police note that officers did not go after the van.
Shortly thereafter, Ortiz was headed west on Lithuanian Plaza Court when he struck head-on a Ford sedan that was going east.
The man driving the Ford suffered serious injuries and was transported to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said.
Ortiz had four passengers in the Honda at the time of the crash. Police said they were sent to various local hospitals and were described to be in good condition.
Ortiz was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was placed into custody and charged. He is in good condition, police said.
CPD has charged Ortiz with three separate felonies- possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing, as well as aggravated driving. He also was issued seven traffic citation, including driving on a suspended license.
Ortiz was scheduled to have a detention hearing on Saturday, March 2.
