(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 33-year-old Woodridge motorist was being held on $1 million bond after he allegedly struck and killed a bicyclist while driving drunk on Sunday.
Authorities say Salil Chander had a blood-alcohol level of nearly three times the state’s legal limit of 0.08 when police took him into custody shortly after a fatal hit-and-run in 1900 block of Green Trails Drive.
Chander was driving a silver Kia around 5 p.m. when he struck a light pole on Nelson Court before proceeding to Green Trails Drive, officials said. He allegedly veered into the opposite lane and struck bicyclist Michael Norton of Naperville, killing the 64-year-old.
Chander is accused of driving away. Woodridge police officers quickly apprehended the driver, whose BAC was 0.222, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.
State’s Attorney Robert Berlin calls the allegations “horrific.”
“In Illinois, if you are involved in an any type of accident, the law requires you to stop and report the accident. Moreover, leaving the scene of a horrible crash that killed an innocent man, as alleged in this case, is not only illegal, but also inexcusable,” he said in a news release.
Chander is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and aggravated DUI resulting in death. A judge set his bond at $1 million on Tuesday. He’s next due in court Sept. 1.
