DUPAGE COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Amid a budget fight, the head of the DuPage County Board and others suggest taking control of local elections away from the County Clerk.

Four years ago, DuPage County dissolved its troubled Election Commission, and put power over the elections in the County Clerk's office as it is in much of the state.

However, DuPage Clerk Jean Kascmarek and the County Board have clashed over control of the budget. Kasmareck read a steadfast statement to a Board Committee Tuesday and left the room, refusing to say more.

County Board President Deb Conroy proposed stripping the Clerk of election controls.

"It is my understanding that there is process that I can enter into to remove the election commission from the clerk's office and I would like to ask the State's Attorney to address that."

States Attorney Bob Berlin said he'll have to research the issue. Board member Jim Zay suggested they simply repeal the law they passed four years ago.
