(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Days after the country hit its debt limit, Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin pushed back on the idea of the White House negotiating with House republicans to raise the ceiling.
Senate Majority Whip Durbin tried to lay blame on Republicans for the country meeting its borrowing limit while appearing on CNN’s State of the Union.
“Those who are posing for holy pictures as budget balancers, the MAGA Republicans, should note one important fact: Almost 25% of all of the nat’l debt accumulated over the history of the United States — 230 years — was accumulated during the four years of Donald Trump,” the senator said.
Last week, Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy opposed Democrats’ calls for a clean bill to raise the debt ceiling without other items, such as spending cuts.
Durbin criticized Republicans for enacting tax cuts “for the wealthiest people in America” under the Trump Administration, and argued that doing so added “dramatically” to the national debt.
“Having done that, they need to face the responsibility of paying for it,” Durbin said.
The Illinois senator said a delay in raising the debt ceiling would put the economy at risk of a recession.
