EAST HAZEL CREST (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Officials hope to open the Wind Creek Chicago Southland Casino on Monday, but they’re waiting for final state approval.
Wind Creek Casino is waiting for the final okay from the Illinois Gaming Board before it can open next week.
The brand-spanking new entertainment venue is located in south suburban East Hazel Crest, on Halsted, just off I-80. It’s positioned to try to entice Illinoisans to play and gamble in the Land of Lincoln instead of driving 16 miles to a casino in Northwest Indiana.
The casino was supposed to cost $529 million to build, but, officials said, it went way over budget.
The casino has more than 1,400 slot machines and 56 gaming tables. It’s expected to open a sports book next year, and its 16-story hotel is supposed to open for business in the coming months.
Estimates are the casino could generate a couple of million dollars a year for the south suburban economy.
