(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois’ two largest teacher unions support Gov. JB Pritzker’s newest actions in the fight against the pandemic.
Simply put, the Illinois Federation of Teachers and the Illinois Education Association are buying in to the governor’s latest COVID mitigations.
The governor says employees of K-12th grade schools and colleges and universities must be vaccinated or be tested, at least once a week, for COVID-19.
Dan Montgomery, president of the Illinois Federation of Teachers, of which the Chicago Teachers Union is a part, said: “We support it. We think it’s the right decision because it’s based in science and public health and medicine.”
Kathi Griffin, the president of the Illinois Education Association, agreed Thursday. She said there are still some things to be worked out but believes that will happen.
“Having vaccines or making sure that you’re tested to make sure you’re not carrying the COVID virus into the classroom, as well as masking, is a way that we can continue to be in-person with our students,” she said.
The teacher union leaders say teachers are already among the most vaccinated population in the state.
