Electrical vault fire forces West Loop hotel to evacuate

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An electrical vault fire in the West Loop caused a nearby hotel to evacuate and resulted in a hazmat situation.

The Chicago Fire Department said crews responded to the underground fire on 113 N. Green Street, near Washington Boulevard and the Soho House hotel, shortly before 6 a.m.

It was coming from a ComEd electrical vault and was declared a level two hazmat situation.

Crews evacuated the hotel and quickly put out the fire, the CFD said.

No injuries were reported.

A CTA bus was provided as temporary shelter for hotel guests and employees.

The fire department and ComEd officials remained on the scene for several hours. Crews cut the power to the hotel building and watered the vault and monitored carbon monoxide levels.

ComEd deemed the scene safe at around 7:40 a.m. However, the power remains out at Soho House.

CFD Fire District Chief Robert Jurewicz told reporters it will most likely be a while until guests can to return to the hotel.

"The building is not going to have power for awhile, so they're probably going to have find somewhere else," Jurewicz said.
