Declining enrollments at the City Colleges of Chicago seem to be a thing of the past these days. The City's seven community colleges have been growing, and at a strong pace.
Juan Salgado, Chancellor of the City Colleges, said the Illinois Community College Board reports that Chicago's seven institutions have grown by nearly 17% since last year.
The numbers show that the City Colleges have grown by a combined 16.9% over the past year, more than twice the statewide average among community colleges.
Juan Salgado, Chancellor of the City Colleges, said all seven of the schools saw gains this spring, the largest year-to-year growth in more than a decade. He credits a new tuition-free program in its career track.
The City Colleges Board of Trustees recently extended Salgado's contract for another four years.
Salgado insists things will get even better.
"This is my passion. I believe in the mission, the work. I want to ensure that every Chicagoan has access to higher education, career training, upward mobility. And I wake up every day and that's what I think about," Salgado said.
