(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Ten years after it opened for business, a north suburban bakery is growing.

Ellen King is the co-owner and head baker of Hewn Bakery on Central Street in Evanston, which has marked its first decade and opened a new shop in Libertyville. The bakery specializes in rustic breads, sandwiches and pastries.

She tells the Noon Business Hour that she avoided baking in culinary school.

“I am not good in math, so, I tried to avoid the baking side,” she said.

But she changed her mind and attacked baking in a big way. She started experimenting in her apartment after relocating here from Seattle.

Hewn stayed viable during the COVID pandemic. The business survived and is now opening a location in Libertyville.

“We had a lot of customers really advocating and hounding us to go up there.”
