(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A former Naperville firefighter faces several charges for allegedly breaking into a drop box where prescription drugs are discarded and for burglarizing a vehicle, DuPage County prosecutors say.

Authorities say Zachary Volland in February broke into a parked vehicle at a Naperville Fire Department property on Aurora Avenue. An investigation into that crime led police to charge Volland for allegedly stealing prescription medications from a drop box at a fire department property on Bailey Road, officials said.

Charges against him include official misconduct, burglary and theft. Volland reportedly turned himself into authorities this week and he was released from custody. He’s due in court in April.

“The allegations against Mr. Volland are very serious,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a prepared statement.  “I would like to stress however, that these allegations are levied against an individual and are in no way indicative of the Naperville Fire Department as a whole.”
