(WBBM NEWSADIO) -- Flossmoor's first Black police chief, who recently was fired for alleged poor performance, is fighting back.
Jerel Jones has filed a federal civil-rights lawsuit against the village and the village manager. His attorney, Cass Casper, on Monday said the firing follows a pattern of racially discriminatory behavior.
“This is race-based animus through and through. This is a Black department head not meeting up to the expectations of a white administration because he’s Black. These are not legitimate performance concerns.
They’re race-based ones,” Casper said.
Mayor Michelle Nelson has said village officials communicated their performance concerns to Jones on several occasions and that there continued to be serious operational and administrative lapses under his watch.
