CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago alderpersons have given preliminary approval for former prosecutor Tobara Richardson to become the city’s new Deputy Inspector General for Public Safety.

Members of the City Council Public Safety Committee gave Tobara Richardson a warm welcome and a unanimous recommendation to fill the previous held by Deborah Witzburg, who has been promoted to the top Inspector General.

Richardson has been a federal prosecutor, an assistant State's Attorney and is currently counsel to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul. Richardson’s a lifelong Chicagoan.

The recommendation goes to the full council next Wednesday.

Committee Vice-Chair Harry Osterman asked how long Richardson planned to stay as Deputy IG for Public Safety. She noted Deborah Witzberg's time in the job and told the Committee that she would like to serve as long as the Council will have her.

Ald. Emma Mitts (37th) asked Richardson what her top priority would be. She answered that the section is already doing great work, even without a leader.

Richardson said she'll continue that work.

Still, she did suggest they might want to look into police traffic stops.
