(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The fan who threw a liquid at Cardi B Saturday in Las Vegas reportedly has accused the rapper of battery for throwing her microphone at the fan in retaliation.

What's up with all the throwing, anyway?

According to one academic, people throw things to make a connection.

"You can think about throwing rice or candy at the newlywed couple,” says Ayelet Fishbach, professor of behavioral science and marketing at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

"You can think about the bride throwing her flower bouquet."

Or, Fishbach says, female fans who used to throw their underwear at singer Tom Jones.

But throwing heavy objects like phones?

"It's not smart, that's for sure,” Fishbach says. “But you are connecting to them, in a way. And we see that when physical connection is not possible, people go for the symbolic connection."

Dr. Fishbach says the copycats are often following the lead of the first fans who threw something on stage, to be part of "the group."

In any case, she says, Lollapalooza organizers should keep all this in mind when planning security.
