CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Counterfeit U.S. Postal Service stamps were recently discovered in Chicago.

A routine U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) check of Chinese cargo arriving at the Chicago International Mail facility at O'Hare led to the discovery of more than 160,000 counterfeit U.S. Forever stamps, likely purchased by online consumers at a discount.

“If it’s too good to be true, it probably is, so make sure you stay away from things that are promising everything you want at just a reduced price,” says CBP Public Affairs Officer Steve Bansbach.

The counterfeit stamp books and rolls, located in 8 separate shipments hold a face value of well over $100,00.

Bansbach tells WBBM that the stamps were inside preaddressed packages meant for customers in the U.S., and that parcels using counterfeit stamps will be returned to the sender.

“I would urge everybody to purchase them from a reliable site,” Bansbach adds.
