CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Local Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials were busy last year when it came to seizing some dangerous devices.

Nearly 500 shipments containing just over 15,000 weapon-modifying devices or “Glock switches” were recovered by agents in Chicago last year.

“I would say that this is probably a little bit higher than the norm,” says CBP Public Affairs Officer Steve Bansbach.

He adds the majority of the shipments came from China and were headed to cities across the country.

“These are one of those things that would be so dangerous if they were to get out to the public,” Bansbach tells WBBM. “We’re so happy that we were able to stop these and will continue to stop these and make sure nothing gets out to the public.”

He says a big issue is that the devices, which convert semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic weapons, can easily be ordered online or even made by 3D printers.
