Efforts to put out fire in historic home leads to boil order in Oswego

OSWEGO, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Efforts to put out a fire in a more than century old home Wednesday afternoon are being blamed for a boil order in Oswego.

The boil order is expected to last through at least Thursday afternoon, according to the village. Crews fighting the fire in the home that was built in 1902 struggled to get enough water.

A battalion chief told ABC 7 one of the oldest hydrants in town is across the street from what neighbors call the Pillar's House. It’s on a smaller water main so they had to use a different hydrant as well.

"Because of the fire and the amount of water that they're drawing through their engines and trucks down there, it just took everything that these pipes had," said Brad Reese, Assistant Director for the Village of Oswego Public Works Department.

No one was injured in the fire that likely led to two water main breaks. Firefighters were able to retrieve family heirlooms and photos for homeowners.
