(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - If you’re feeling under the weather lately you’re not alone.

Local health experts say it's no coincidence that when the masks came down, respiratory infections started to go up.

Dr. Ban Al-Sayyed, division director for infectious diseases at Loyola University, says typically influenza tapers off by March and April but this year has been different.

“Now, since the masks were taken off, we’ve been seeing cases of influenza on the rise for the last two months,” said Al-Sayyed.

The doctor says it’s also a challenge differentiating a cold, flu, or even allergies from COVID-19.

“Having more fatigability, having now more of mild temperature with those symptoms, I think having more hoarseness of my voice, which is not something that I’m familiar with allergies, then you should be checked mainly for the COVID,” Al-Sayyed said.
