CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A former employee of Lurie Children’s Hospital is charged with five felonies for allegedly stealing nitrous oxide used for surgeries.

39-year-old Mitchell Gunther, of Burbank, according to the Attorney General’s Office, was an assistant in charge of the hospital’s medical gas supplies.

Another employee noticed abnormalities, and video is alleged to have shown Gunther removing tanks of the gas, sometimes used for recreational purposes. He’s also alleged to have ordered extra.

At one point, the A.G.’s office said the supply was down to one tank, critically low.

Gunther was fired and, according to the charges, he went to St. Mary’s Hospital on the West Side and posed as a delivery driver, swapping his empty tanks for full tanks.

In all, he’s alleged to have stolen about ten tanks.

“It is outrageous that someone would use their access at the hospital and jeopardize vulnerable patients in order to make a personal profit,” Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said in a statement.
