Friends speak out after UC student dies after being shot on CTA Green Line

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A University of Chicago student died after being shot while riding the CTA Green Line, and now, friends and loved ones are speaking out.

“I was told Max was shot and he was shot in the neck and it was really bad,” friend and AE Pi fraternity brother Zachary Cogan told CBS 2.

“I mean this is the longest I’ve gone without talking to him, and since I met Max two years ago. So this is really, really life changing."

Max Solomon Lewis, 20, was hit in the back of the neck by a stray bullet while riding a Green Line train last week near the 51st Street station in Washington Park.

Lewis, a third-year student at the University of Chicago, died of his injuries Sunday after being taken off life support, police and university officials said.

“To have his life taken away from him by someone completely random on his way back to his apartment is just terrifying,” said friend and Promontory Investment Research member Victoria Gin. “And it just hurts so much that someone we know and were so close to, this could happen.”

Chicago Police believe Lewis was not the intended target.

As of Tuesday morning, no arrests have been made.

A statement from the University of Chicago said, “The University of Chicago community is devastated by the loss of Max Solomon Lewis, an undergraduate student who has passed away from injuries related to being shot while sitting in an off-campus Chicago Transit Authority elevated train on Thursday, July 1. Our deepest sympathies are with Max’s family, friends, and all who knew him. He was a talented student and beloved individual who will be greatly missed.”

Lewis was pursuing a double major in economics and computer science, treasurer of the Promontory Investment Research RSO, president of the fraternity AEPi, and actively involved in the student community on campus, university officials said.
