(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Indiana State Police have established a fundraising account for the funeral and the family of a trooper who was killed in the line of duty last week.
Indiana State Police said donations for the family of trooper Aaron Smith can be made through the Indiana Fallen Heroes Foundation or at Indiana Members Credit Union locations.
The trooper was killed while throwing stop sticks across a highway in an effort to flatten the tires of a stolen car being pursued by police.
Video captured the car swerving toward and hitting the 33-year-old trooper.
Indiana State Police Supt. Doug Carter on the night Smith was killed, said they had crossed paths.
“He was one of those guys — I, still, I remember him — he was one of those guys that stood out,” Carter said.
Smith had been a trooper for about five years.
On the Indiana State Police Indianapolis District’s Facebook page, officials wrote that scammers had established fundraising pages on social media that purported to benefit Smith’s family. Authorities reiterated that the official memorial funds are through the Indiana Fallen Heroes Foundation or the Indiana Members Credit Union.
A visitation for Smith will take place Thursday afternoon at Emmanuel Church in Greenwood. The funeral service will be at the church at 11 a.m. on Friday.
