CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Girl Scouts are teaming up with former First Lady Michelle Obama next week for a virtual event.

Michelle Obama has worked with the Girl Scouts before, including a White House event six years ago.

"The Girl Scouts camped on the White House lawn," said Nancy Wright, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

Wright said the former First Lady is bringing her interest in mental and physical wellness to a virtual event on May 6 that will tie in with Michelle Obama’s book ‘Becoming’, which has been adapted for younger readers.

Wright said it aligns with their mission of helping girls discover who they are.

"The themes within Mrs. Obama's book 'Becoming' has been adapted for young readers, and it is about resilience, finding your voice, and becoming what's really important to you - your true self - and that's what Girl Scouts is all about," she said.

Two local girl scouts will join Mrs. Obama for the virtual presentation: Zoey, a 6th grader from Matteson and Mali, a second grader from Chicago.

The program is part of a recruitment effort by the Girl Scouts who saw a dramatic drop in membership over the past year.

Wright said their local council saw attendance drop from 52,000 girls in 2019 to 27,000 girls last year.

They hope to rebound with events like this, plus a return to in-person activities including summer camp.
