NORTHBROOK, IL ( WBBM NEWSRADIO) - While the center of the college basketball universe was focused on Monday night’s title game, a group of fans in the northern suburbs are already looking forward to next year – for Duke’s first season under Northbrook native Jon Scheyer.

Dave Weber saw Scheyer’s eagerness to study the game and improve while coaching him at Glenbrook North, qualities Weber knew would serve the now 34-year-old well.

“I knew he had that in him, to be a coach, and his competitive drive made him even that much more attractive as far as the coaching profession,” said Weber.

Assistant Principal for Athletes John Catalano said Scheyer visited with teachers and coaches at his alma mater in January while here on a recruiting trip.

“Extremely proud of what he’s accomplished, both the teachers and the coaches, it’s really been an incredible kind of run for him,” Catalano said.

Weber occasionally texts with Scheyer – including after Duke’s loss to North Carolina – and said taking over for Coach K is a difficult position but sees in Scheyer many of the same qualities as the legendary coach.

“I think next year when I see Jon on the sidelines, as the head coach, it’s going to be a little bit different. Even now I can see he was doing more and more coaching,” Weber said.
