(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Oberweis Dairy, founded nearly 100 years in Aurora by local dairy farmer Peter Oberweis, filed for bankruptcy protection on Friday.

In its filing, the company — still based in Aurora —  listed more than $4 million in debt to over a dozen vendors, including Penske, as well as the Cook County Treasurer’s Office.

Oberweis Dairy did not respond to WBBM Newsradio’s request for comment.

The filing was signed by Oberweis President Adam Kraber.

The business has remained under family control for generations, with Jim Oberweis serving as its president since 2007. Oberweis also served as a state senator from 2013 – 2021, though he lost in elections for Illinois governor, the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate.

Oberweis reportedly told Crain’s Chicago that, in July 2023, he transitioned out of the business. He told the paper he has not been involved with the company since that time.

The full filing can be found here.
