Google will preserve core of Thompson Center, including soaring glass atrium

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Google is offering a peek at what its new offices will look like when the Thompson Center is renovated, and the building’s famous glass atrium is part of the plan.

According to a blog post from Google executive Karen Sauder, the company will honor the history of Chicago. Google is working with the building’s original architectural firm to bring the design into the 21st century, while maintaining its iconic form.

There’ll be an enhanced ground-floor experience, including more food and beverage opportunities.

As for the building’s famous glass sheathing, triple-pane glass will be installed so that it will require less energy to heat and cool the building.

“The Thompson Center’s signature 17-story, light-filled atrium will remain,” Sauder wrote.

The outdated heating and cooling equipment will be replaced with high-efficiency systems, Sauder said.

Google also promises more greenspace.

Illinois state government previously used the building for agency offices, but it fell into disrepair and the Thompson Center’s future was in question. The property was sold last year to Google, which promised to keep the basic building intact.
