CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A group that advocates for seniors said the City of Chicago can do more to make sure that managers of senior housing comply with rules to protect residents from COVID-19.
The Jane Addams Senior Caucus claims that some managers of senior housing are either ignoring city ordinances regarding COVID safety protocols or have used the pandemic as an excuse to reduce key staff, such as janitors.
Gail Schechter, Executive Director of Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.), said she cannot understand why there isn't more compliance.
"This ordinance is especially important, because it calls on managers of senior buildings just to do some simple wellness checks," she said.
Schecter said some managers might be ignoring the rules, while others might simply not be aware of the requirements.
"I think a lot of it is simply ignorance. People may have heard about it once, and then they had forgotten about it," she said.
The Jane Addams Senior Caucus is calling on the city to inform all senior housing managers in Chicago of their obligations to protect seniors during the pandemic, as well as the penalties they face if they fail to comply.
