CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- About 75 children from Afghanistan arrived in Chicago on Wednesday on a flight from Qatar, the first of several hundred resettling in Illinois.

The children were unaccompanied, meaning they were travelling without parents or guardians, and were either meeting relatives, sponsor families, or agencies.

"Illinois and the Chicago area, I think, is really one of the best places to address this challenge. We have a number of institutions, organizations that are able to help take care of unaccompanied children," said Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky.

She said more than 800 Afghan refugees will be starting a new life in Illinois, with more than 500 in the Chicago area; "and they are supposed to begin coming on Oct. 1."
