(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two weeks after an 11-year-old girl was sexually abused walking home from school in Washington Park, lawmakers and community members are pushing for more attention and resources for crimes against women and children.
Lissy Wakefield stood in front of the alley here where her daughter was dragged by the mouth and attacked. The mother asked for help in finding the man responsible “so he don’t do this to nobody else.”
Congressman Bobby Rush called the group of people gathered for a press conference Wednesday a “coalition of pain” because many — like U.S. Rep. Danny Davis — have lost a loved one to violence.
“We are calling on each other to be watchful,” Davis said.
Wakefield says she’s still waiting on the investigation by Chicago police. A suspect who had been detained was released.
A Chicago police spokesman says detectives continue to investigate.
