CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --North Avenue Beach was closed Friday, hours after it officially opened to swimming, after a gun was fired during a large fight, according to Chicago police.
About 80 to 100 teenagers were gathered at the beach around 1:30 p.m. when the fight broke out and one person pulled out a gun and fired it, police said.
"No people were struck, thank god," Interim Police Supt. Fred Waller said.
A 16-year-old suspect was taken into custody, he said. Another individual with two weapons on him also was taken into custody, Waller said, but police don't think they have the gun that was fired.
North Avenue Beach will remained closed indefinitely, police said, though the bike path remained open. Police said bags were being searched at different checkpoints along the beachfront.
Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson and city leaders touted the Memorial Weekend safety plan in an event at 63rd Street Beach Thursday. So far, there are no reports of any injuries.
