'Hello Not So Fresh': Aurora residents make a stink over smelly, noisy Hello Fresh-owned factory
(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — In Aurora, residents in one neighborhood said they're upset over the smells and sounds coming from a Hello Fresh-owned food production facility, and the company is responding.
"We call it Hello Not So Fresh," Julie Hirschberg told CBS 2.
Hirschberg lives near Factor, a meal kit company under the Hello Fresh umbrella. She and others said the odors coming from the facility, as well as the noise coming from idling trucks, is unbearable.
"My bedroom is on the first floor," she said. "I have not been able to sleep in there since April of 2021."
A couple of representatives from Hello Fresh addressed the Aurora City Council Tuesday night. They said new fencing has reduced noise from trucks by 17%. As for the smells, Dave Wingerhoff said the company is testing new grilling technology at a facility in Arizona.
"If it proves out to be successful, we'll reduce further the amount of vapors or aromas that are escaping the facility," he said.
The Hello Fresh representatives said the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has found that emissions are not violating any codes.
Nonetheless, Hirschberg described the smells coming from the factory as "stifling."
