Henyard opponent voted in as Thornton Township trustee

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Voters in Thornton Township picked a new trustee during a special election Tuesday night, tipping the balance of power away from Supervisor Tiffany Henyard.

Hundreds packed the gym at South Suburban College in South Holland.

Stephanie Wiedeman was picked to fill a vacancy left by a resignation.

The embattled Township Supervisor Tiffany Henyard had the authority to appoint a new trustee, but she only had a 60-day window.

Two of her opponents on the board, trustees Chris Gonzalez and Carmen Carlisle, boycotted meetings to prevent that.

Wiedeman will serve until new trustees are sworn in in May. She was executive assistant to the former supervisor, Frank Zuccarelli, and was fired when Henyard took office.

“I am going to be a voice for the residents. I’m on the side of what is best for the collective,” Wiedeman told CBS News Chicago.

Henyard sued to get on the ballot for supervisor after township Democrats orchestrated a rare caucus, choosing State Sen. Napoleon Harris as their candidate.
